Huddersfield Town 0-0 Bristol City: Terriers score points against relegation

Huddersfield goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik made some great saves to keep Bristol City out of the game

Neil Warnock’s side Huddersfield Town weathered Bristol City’s attack in the first half to earn a point in their fight for relegation from the Championship.

The Robins created some good chances in the first 45 minutes and the hosts were grateful to goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik, who saved the series to keep the goalless draw.

Huddersfield failed to score on target in the first half but improved after the break with substitute Josh Koroma scoring on 67 minutes.

They came close to getting the winner late as the corner was almost over, only for Andi Weimann to clear it from the line.

The point moves Huddersfield up one place to 23rd, but they remain deep in relegation trouble, six points off safety, while Bristol City also move up a place to 13th.

Vaclik sprang into action immediately to smother a through pass to Nahka Wells before Sam Bell netted from a George Tanner cross.

The Czech goalkeeper had to stay vigilant again to save Mark Sykes’ header as the chances began to pile up. Perfectly stopped to prevent Cameron Pring’s headbutt 10 minutes before half-time.

In a rare outing, the hosts won a corner in the first half, which led Jack Rudoni to see the shot blocked as they finished the half with no focus on goal and only 29% possession of the ball.

The second half started in a similar vein with Vaclik again making saves from Sykes and Pring before Huddersfield began to improve and create chances of their own, with substitutes Martyn Waghorn and Koroma linking up in a fluid motion with the latter dragging a shot across the goal and narrowly wide.

The game became more even as both sides looked for a late winner and Vaclik prevented an own goal late in the game when captain Jonathan Hogg headed dangerously towards his own goal.

Huddersfield then had a chance to win as Rudoni was turned down twice by Robins goalkeeper Max O’Leary and Weimann came off the line to ensure the spoils were shared.

Finding the back of the net is still a problem for Huddersfield, who have failed to score in five of their last six games, but will be content to keep a clean sheet after conceding eight goals in their previous two games.

Huddersfield manager Neil Warnock told BBC Radio Leeds:

“I think the boys did really well. It’s disappointing that we didn’t get three points. We started with apprehension and I think it’s only natural after such a disappointing result [losing 4-0 to Coventry on Saturday].

“We played too fast for the first half hour, but when we calmed down and brought them into halftime, we told them, ‘I think we can win this,’ and the crowd supported us as well.

“I can’t fault it and thought there were some good performances tonight.

“If we don’t make elementary mistakes, we don’t have a bad side, just when we make mistakes, like on Saturday, we look like an amateur team, so we have to get out of it and I think he can give a match to these top teams now. We must now take care of our own happiness. ”

Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson told BBC Radio Bristol:

“[It was] a game we should have won. We created chances but have a hard time converting them when they come at the moment.

“I thought we were on top for most of the game but we put the game at risk with one or two bad decisions at a late point when we needed to control the game and we didn’t, but it’s a missed opportunity for us.

“They didn’t create anything noteworthy until late and we were on top.

“It was frustrating because these are games where we were wasting a bit of points in terms of picking up points.

“We’ve had enough chances to win the game but we’re going into another game without scoring and that’s something we need to find a solution to pretty quickly. We need to start gaining clinical advantage again.”
