League Two Grimsby Town reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time in 84 years thanks to two penalties on either side of first-half stunned Premier League contenders Southampton.
Gavan Holohan put the visitors ahead shortly before half-time after referee Thomas Bramall ruled Lyanco had hand-blocked Josh Emmanuel’s cross.
Shortly after the restart, Southampton defender Duje Caleta-Car caught Danilo Orsi with a waving arm, allowing Holohan to capitalize on his second scoring goal of the match.
A close-range Caleta-Car finish gave the Saints hope, with Theo Walcott ruling out a late equalizer for offside while Grimsby kept the scenes of massive celebration alive among the 4,000 traveling Mariners fans.
Grimsby are only the sixth team from the fourth tier or below to reach the last eight of the FA Cup since the division was introduced in 1958-59 – and the first since National League Lincoln City shocked Premier League Burnley in 2017.
They are the 13th team in the fourth tier or lower to defeat top-flight rivals since the renaming of the Football League at the start of the 2004/05 season.
