World of Warcraft: Dragonflight players, while combing through the upcoming 10.1 Embers of Neltharion game update on the MMO Public Test Server, have uncovered evidence that leads some to believe that a third specialization is coming for the new Evoker class.
Summoners, which are a class exclusive to the new drakthyr race, were introduced as part of a pre-Dragonflight patch in October 2022. They currently have two specializations for players to choose from, Devastation and Preservation, with the former focusing on dealing magic damage from a distance and the latter on healing allies and preventing damage. This is the second class in WoW, next to the Demon Hunter, to have only two specializations, as opposed to the standard three.
But fans believe there may be a third specialization in the cards, based on a data science quest found on the game’s PTR. As reported by Wowhead, the Evoker-specific quest titled “Our Destiny” now features placeholder text that refers to a “memorized new specialization” and mentions that the secrets unearthed in the game’s 10.0. develop soon. Further down the quest chain, players are tasked with helping the black dragon Ebyssian subdue the boss-level enemy. Interestingly, the quest text mentions that players will need to help Ebyssian by healing or “buffing” him, or alternatively they can deal damage to the boss to complete the quest.
The quest text about the new mastery, coupled with the reference to “buffing” allies instead of directly healing them, led fans to believe that this third mastery, which has yet to be announced or confirmed by Blizzard, could be a second heal or support mastery for Summoners.
Some fans were hoping Evokers would see a specialization for tanks, but a recent interview between content creator Towelliee and WoW’s deputy game director Morgan Day makes that seem unlikely. However, Day doesn’t dismiss the idea of adding a new specialization entirely, which he said has simply never been done before.
“I mean, we never really added specs, so I can’t talk about that,” said Day when asked about the possibility of adding tank specializations. “You know when we talk about Evokers we really wanted to add a ranged DPS spec like it’s a target and they have big old wings so there’s a lot of discussion about what it would look like in melee and stuff like that so… Tanks have been discussed in the beginning, when the Evokers were the twinkle in our eyes.
There is currently only one class in the game that has two supporting specializations, Priest. One mastery, Holy, focuses on healing allies directly, while Discipline is more about helping allies prevent or absorb damage. Perhaps Evoker’s third specialization would go that route, but until more information is uncovered, fans can only speculate.
Blizzard recently blew the cover on the game’s 10.1 update, but made no official mention of the new Evoker specialization. It’s possible that the idea was dropped and the mention of it remained in the test version of the game by accident, or Blizzard is just trying to make the new specialization a surprise that we will announce at a later date.
Even if Evoker’s third specialization doesn’t arrive, players can still look forward to Dragonflight 10.1, which currently has no release date but will bring a new raid, a huge underground zone, cross-faction guilds, and major changes to the game’s Mythic+ system. Meanwhile, patch 10.0.7 will allow players to return to the dracthyr starting zone, the Forbidden Reach, to discover the race’s origins and claim a powerful new ring.
