And if you work in technology, the bar has been raised even higher. That’s according to data compiled by interviewing.io, a test interview platform, which found that tech job applicants now need to do 15% better at an interview than they did in 2022 to be hired.

Power change

This is probably due to one main factor: layoffs. As of early 2023, 436 tech companies around the world have laid off 122,341 employees, with companies like Amazon, Meta, Stripe, PayPal and Twitter – companies that previously seemed financially resilient and untouchable – dominating the headlines.

Through its research, the interview platform also found that software engineers are now feeling the pinch, a sector that has seemingly remained solid despite periods of company restructuring and staff reductions.

What to do

So what can engineers who are looking for a new job do to make sure they raise the bar during the interview and secure the coveted job offer? The job site Indeed advises candidates to prepare for three different interviews.

One is a phone screen where questions about your experience will be asked, another is a remote coding task that will test your proficiency in your skills and experience, as well as your predispositions and abilities for the job you are applying for. You should also prepare for an in-person interview where behavioral and technical questions will be asked and you will have the opportunity to ask your own questions.

It’s helpful to categorize your technical knowledge and tailor it to the specific position you’re applying for. For example, if you’re applying for a job that’s primarily about cybersecurity, focus on your problem-solving skills and how you can adapt your skill set to respond to threats in real-time while reinstating preventive measures. Similarly, if you’re applying for a position that uses Kubernetes but you’ve only used Docker, you’ll need to brush up on the differences between these cloud-based solutions.

If you really want to give yourself a competitive edge, a tech bootcamp or refresher course is a great option to quickly get acquainted with the latest programs and processes.
